Peter Carlin, MSW, LGSW
Peter earned an MA in Social Work from the University of Minnesota, an MA in Education from St. Mary’s University (both in the Twin Cities),and a BA in Professional Writing decades ago from Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, PA. He grew up in New Rochelle, NY, lived in Washington DC, then Los Angeles, CA, before moving to Minneapolis, MN. He most recently worked in clients’ homes providing support for those with severe and persistent mental illness, in a day treatment program for men who committed criminal sexual offenses, and as an adult tutor in the county jail.
He claims that all his previous work - as an artist, a truck driver, and a teacher, to name just several careers - brought him to his work as a therapist today.
For the last thirty years, Peter has been helping people of all ages meet and overcome the challenges that everyday life brings them. He specializes in the treatment of addiction in its many forms; co-occurring disorders such as depression, ADHD, and anxiety; and sexual and relational health, for both men and women. Using both the traditional techniques of narrative therapy, DBT, CBT, ACT and the 12 Steps, as well as any unique treatment collaboratively arrived at with a client, Peter has treated people seeking support and change, whether or not they themselves feel committed to that.
After a loving 20-year marriage, Peter engaged in a “successful” divorce with curiosity and integrity. (He wrote an essay about it for Esquire.) As a brother, husband, father, and caretaker - and ultimately, eulogist - of an aging parent, Peter is now experiencing a reinvention of authentic and exciting relationships, and is committed to helping others understand and meet themselves.
